What Makes Britney Britney?

A lot of Britney fans have been somewhat flummoxed by Michael Jackson’s reported remark to Rabbi Schmuley Boteach that "I don't believe that she'll have any great longevity in the public eye because she doesn't understand the power of mystery." Nobody knows quite what he meant by “great longevity”. Obviously there are those who assume he is going to be proved right (because he WAS Michael Jackson, after all, and therefore superhuman in his opinions as well as his performing ability), and that he meant she wouldn’t have a 30-year career like Madonna, etc. etc.

It’s hard to see how “Radar” and “Gimme More” have much in common. And “Heaven on Earth” is at pretty much the opposite end of the pop spectrum from “Piece of Me”, “Freakshow” and “Toy Soldier”. I find it strange that so many fans base their high regard for “Blackout” on the grounds that it’s “all of a piece” and has a “consistent style” throughout. In fact, the only thing that’s consistent is that none of the songs are ballads.

“Break The Ice” is short and deceptively simple. Some people might try to dismiss it as “bubblegum pop”, but this is to disregard its sheer quality. If you listen with any attention, each time you hear it you'll notice things you hadn’t noticed before. Some songs are impactful at first, but you soon feel that you're done with them and don't really want to hear them again. "Break The Ice" can take a lot of listens and that never happens - I know because it took ME a lot of listens to write this analysis. So...how was the track constructed to give it such hidden depths?

When “Radar” first saw the light on the Night of the Great Leak, fans were confused and uncertain. It sounded so different from the rest of the tracks recorded for the “Blackout” project, and some people wondered if it was actually really old - perhaps a long-lost outtake from the “Toxic” era? Maybe that was one reason why there was such muted enthusiasm for the track. There was certainly a great deal of ambivalence, and to this day there are fans who make the sign of the cross and hang out garlic at the very mention of its name.
