The problem with being the most visible, most talked-about, most ballyhooed star in the world is that it provokes bitterness among the mean-spirited. If you're low-profile, nobody cares except your fans, but if you're Britney Spears everyone and his dog has an opinion, whether informed and intelligent or ignorant and biased.

“I don’t think Britney knows who or what she is any more”. When this was said of her in 2004 it seemed like one of those glib, thoughtless little comments people often make about celebs gone wild. But, with the benefit of hindsight, it turns out to have been one of the most insightful things ever said about her.

I realise that what I’m about to say is not going to be popular with some people, because it ends up with a positive prediction. Not a "she's gonna come back and be the old Britney again" prediction, since I don't believe that will EVER happen. But it's one that shows how past events, even if they looked horrific at the time, can lead naturally and organically to progress on a long and difficult path.

I don’t even know why I’m writing this article, or why I’m still planning to write more. When I became fascinated by Britney Spears and began to write about her, most of the fans I encountered received the resulting articles with interest and gratitude. This is no longer the case, and the reason is both simple and sad. It appears that the fashionable response now to an article that tries to deal with the subject of Britney in a reasonably sympathetic (or even-handed) way is to laugh at it and sneer at the author.
