Advantages of being a Tragic Icon
Written by Karen
February 28, 2007
I've been reading speculation on some Britney fan forums that she probably won't come back in 2007 after all. I can't disagree with that - but at this point, all bets are off. One thing Britney is is unpredictable and she could still surprise us. I've also been seeing the opinion that she'll never be as big again, and I think it's safe to disagree with that. The drama in Britney's life has been horrible, but it all adds to her legendary status. She's taking her place among the tragic icons like Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf and Dorothy Squires. OK, I know these are names from the distant past, and the press are a lot less forgiving of troubled stars now. But the public always hold them in deep affection, and any time they care to come back among us they can sell out stadiums and whole seasons in Vegas. They don't even have to be good - they only have to show that they're really trying. They can probably succeed even more in personal appearances than in record sales, and that's because everybody wants to see, in person, these extraordinary people who come from a world so different from ours. An appearance on stage now by Britney Spears would be such a rare and long-anticipated event, it would be like Elvis coming back from his long holiday in Papua New Guinea. What?! You hadn't heard??!!

So it's Post-Partum Depression?
Written by Karen
February 27, 2007
Well that's the rumor that's grown new wings today. And I suppose it's a case of good news and bad news. The good news is that Britney's reputation can only be helped if the explanation for her unravelling is a genuine health problem, rather than something related to an irresponsible lifestyle. I mean, how could anyone laugh at a young woman who's suffering from childbirth-related depression? And I bet there's plenty of potential jokes rumbling around the media that don't have a punchline when Britney Spears isn't around. Unfortunately there's bad news too. PPD ("post-natal depression" to UK fans) is very real and very serious. It can lead to personality changes, mental instability, bipolarity, self-loathing, fear, suicidal urges and plenty more. And, while it doesn't last forever in most patients, it can certainly last a very long time and the personality changes can be permanent. A high-spirited, happy girl can become a temperamental woman - sometimes not only permanently anxious and edgy but bitter and mean too. Britney has a big, big heart as we all know. I hope it hasn't been broken by all of this. Her spell in rehab is only to treat the symptoms of how she's been trying to deal with her problem and make the pain go away, even if only for a few hours. If she comes out free from excess drinking and substance abuse I'll be happy, but if they manage successfully to treat her depression I promise NOT to dance naked on the counter at my local bar! Keep praying, everybody!

Jason Alexander - do we believe him?
Written by Karen
February 25, 2007
It's funny, but every time there's a new scandal or rumor in Britney's life, the tabloids (and especially the British Sunday tabloids - the world's worst) run to her "former husband" for a lurid quote or two. And Jason Alexander is never short of a word or two. Britney's a sexaholic? Oh yeah, sure - you won't believe the stuff she does! She's an alcoholic? Yeah - always was, drunk as a skunk 90% of the time! She's a junkie? Yep! You should have seen the stuff we did back in New Year 2004! She's a lesbian? Of course!!! Didn't I mention that?! It's odd though. Back in 2004, he seemed quite bitter after the marriage annulment and complained to all who would listen that the Spears clan scorned him and wouldn't pay anything. And as for Britney? She didn't stand up for him at all. So why would he hold back on telling ALL in his tell-all to the News Of The World in 2004? He had no reason to, and the News Of The World would certainly have asked "Is there anything more you'd like to tell us, Mr Alexander? We'll pay!" But somehow amnesia set in - until now. The legendary status of his wild weekend with Britney just grows and grows. You'd think nobody else had ever known her or spent time with her. Every day there are quotes from "friends" and "Spears family contacts" in the media, yet nobody else has ever come forward with the things Jason Alexander tells us. Where are all her lesbian lovers? Jason's advice that she's an old country girl and needs to get back where she belongs tells us everything. He's jealous that she made good and he didn't.

Moral support is growing!
Written by Jason
February 25, 2007

A new article featured on Time Magazine's homepage today discusses the fact that, surpsingly to some, there has been a collective wave of realization by many in the media that the recent twists and turns in Britney's life are a tad more significant than mere late-night opening monologue fodder or unintentional Access Hollywood punchlines ("What was Britney THINKING? Heyy-o!" *rimshot*). They realize what everyone should undoubtedly realize by now, the fact that Britney could be you or I.  She's dealing with significant issues just as any of us could be.  Not to say there are not pressing issues globally that this concern and sentiment could also be going towards, but facts are facts: there's plenty to respect and admire about those people who pass up easy opportunities at humor or ratings to sympathize with a young woman who certainly deserves a little sympathy and hope from the world who has collectively so thoroughly accepted her into their homes since she was a child.

Granted, some of the usual suspects are still using Britney and her situation in a negative light all as pure schtick and nothing more (the more-scumbaggish wing of the celebrity blogging sphere using the reactions of Britney's fans to their exaggerated shots at her as their primary means of generating hits, opportunistic photo agencies striking it big by forcefully sharing a person's life in a rehabilitation center with the world, etc), but I think it's an awesome sign that through what seems to be every media embarrassment possible (save a sex tape, knock on wood) there are still people who take the time to look at Britney for what she is: a human being, albeit an extraordinary and worthwhile human being, but a human being nonetheless with human problems, human feelings, and a human heart. Hopefully this respect for her carries over into the general public eventually. We, the fans all over the world, can recognize why she's worth the effort of rooting for, and it's great to see that we are not alone.

Decisions, decisions! Or not.
Written by Karen
February 23, 2007
It's driving me nuts. On various Britney sites I've visited today, I've been reading comments about Britney's umbrella attack on the paparazzi. And I've found that some people are talking about Britney's "bad decisions" lately, tut-tutting their disapproval, and saying how her actions can't be justified. Can these people not get it into their thick heads that Britney didn't DECIDE to attack the paps. She didn't go out armed with a deadly weapon. It was an UMBRELLA, fer **** sake, and it ended up a lot more damaged than the paparazzi's SUV. She didn't DECIDE to make a spectacle of herself in public and get some mad-looking expressions into the tabloids. All of this was a moment of madness, by a girl right on the edge of a breakdown, whose next action was to go into rehab. She wasn't acting with calculation, she was like a wounded animal, charging around dementedly and with no thought for what she was doing or what it looked like. Elsewhere, the same finger-waggers are saying she should have gotten her head shaved in private, because doing it in public was an attention-seeking action. Huh? How many of us have one of those buzzer things at home? How many of us have the immediate instinct to carry out our own hairdressing? I guess she could have called a hairdresser to her home, bribed him/her with a few thousand dollars to do the deed, called her attorney to draw up a secrecy agreement with the hairdresser, then arranged with builders and the local planning authorities to have a tunnel made so she could get out of her house without beng seen. Simple really.

Make love, not hate
Written by Karen
February 21, 2007
I can't even believe what I've been reading on some forums tonight. Perez says he wants Kevin to get the babies AND Britney's money and is looking forward to Britney's third suicide attempt. OK, we need to get Perez into a mental institution, or maybe some kind of zoo. He can't be a sane, normal human being with thoughts like that. Let's classify him as a freak. But what worries me is that EVEN NOW, even after all that's happened, there are still so many people out there who take the cynical, sneering path. What would it TAKE to make these people feel some kind of compassion and understanding? Do they really feel that because Britney has money she can't have problems? It reminds me of Ralph McTell's appalling "Streets of London" where his argument is that you have no right to feel bad if there's someone whose circumstances are worse than yours. Sorry, but it doesn't work like that. You can be a trillionaire and still be suicidal because you're lonely. Calling Britney a "train wreck" is to excuse yourself from common humanity and to admit to having a swinging brick in place of a heart.

Rehab? Don't fret.
Written by Jason
February 20, 2007

Given Britney's recent decision to check herself into rehab, fans and mere observers alike should resist the temptation to use this as an opportunity to kick her at her most vulnerable and pounce on her for reaching the level to which she needed professional help to work through the demons currently holding her down.

Rather, now is the time to celebrate.  Now is the time to be hopeful.  Now is the time to realize that Britney is giving everyone concerned with her well-being a beam of shining light, a beam that is piercing through the fog of uncertainty and gloom that has hung low over Britneyland recently.  She is taking a pit stop in the race of life; a pit stop that will help her regain her footing in an attempt to once again reach the fast track to the next lap as she racest towards prosperity and satisfaction.  Britney has made now the time for action, and while the hardest work is certainly ahead of her, those of us concerned with her well-being should collectively give Britney a  pat on the back, knowing that she is a human being who is likely going to soon again be comfortable with the path she is taking in the race of life.

Welcome to Britneyology!
Written by Jason
February 20, 2007

Welcome to Britneyology.com! As you can see on the description of Britneyology found below the "Forum Activity" section of each page, Britneyology.com is unique among the landscape of Britney websites. This is not a site where you will find random video clips and covers of the latest tabloid rags; rather, Britneyology features only writings from the minds of devoted Britney fans with a desire to study and analyze what it is about Britney Spears that makes her one of the most extraordinary icons of modern entertainment.  The main meat of the site consists of the frequently updated selection of comprehensive articles, while the blog section (which you're reading now) houses more limited streams of thought than the articles, posted when necessary.

Though it is featured on each page, I would like to again highlight what Britneyology is all about:

Britneyolgy.com is a site where Britney Spears is celebrated, not trashed. Through articles and blog postings, we will explain why Britney is not only an international icon, but also a national treasure. We intend to show that Britney is one of the last living exponents of an important tradition of singing that is now all but extinct. This is a site where we examine the rumors, tabloid stories, and picture captions, analyze them, and sort out the interesting and significant from the false and malicious. This is a site where people who want to look a little more deeply into all things Britney will find in-depth articles specially written by our staff, who maintain a high standard of professionalism throughout each writing. New articles will appear regularly to satisfy your appetite for a proper study of the world's most controversial pop star; we call it the science of Britneyology!

We sincerely hope you not only enjoy the ongoing discussion and analysis of all-things-Britney, but we hope every Britney fan can use a visit to Britneyology.com as an opportunity to remind themselves of why Britney Spears has proven herself to be unconditionally worthy of celerbating, through good times and bad.
