Time for reflection on the current crisis

I've deliberately refrained from rushing into print following Britney's night of drama when she was taken to hospital under police restraint. Too many bloggers and gossip columnists have tried to invest the whole affair with their own "meaning" and have created whole worlds of apocalyptic fantasy as a result.

It seems to me, picking my way through the morass of hysterical reportage, that the sequence of events was as follows: Britney thought that because of the time she spent on giving her deposition earlier in the day, she was entitled to keep the babies for another two hours in the evening and refused to hand them back when Kevin's bodyguard turned up.

The bodyguard then called Kevin, who sent his lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan to exert some legal leverage and "lay down the law" with Britney. He didn't get an instant compliance from her, and called the police. The police mistakenly thought that she was under the influence of an "unknown substance" and could under the circumstances be a danger to herself or others. So they had her carted off to hospital under a compulsory restraint order.

The media immediately jumped on the story and fantasized all kinds of things. Most of them printed it as truth that she was under the influence of drugs, threatened to kill Jayden and/or herself, had a gun, bit somebody, trashed her hospital room, etc. etc. etc. As the days go by, all of these juicy fictions are unravelling. But the damage was done, and almost everybody now firmly believes that Britney is clinically insane and should be involuntarily committed to a mental institution.

Anyway, the hospital carried out tests, but found that she was clear of drugs and alcohol and had no other reason to detain her, so they released her with the minimum of delay. In the meantime, Kaplan had seized his moment and put the wheels in motion to remove her visitation rights.

On her release, Britney was therefore faced with a period of loneliness and heartbreak. And she realised that the only thing that ever calmed her down when she felt that she was going crazy was male company, cuddling, comfort, caring and sex. So she hooked up with paparazzo Adnan Ghalib.

The hysteria with which this relationship has been met has been nothing less than unbelievable. And the reason is purely that completely unproven and probably untrue stories were published alleging that Adnan had been hawking some compromising pictures of Britney around the media, looking for millions of dollars. It was claimed that the pictures showed her "semi naked", "wearing only a shirt", "wearing only a bikini bottom" or "naked".

But, as with the regularly-reported yet mythical Britney "sex tape", none of these pictures has actually appeared anywhere. The snide little follow-up in some UK tabloids that Adnan had finally agreed to sell the near-naked pix to an Australian tabloid for $25,000 is beyond ludicrous.

The latest situation is that Britney seems to be spending most of her time with Adnan. Are they in love? Who knows?! Is he using her? Maybe!! Most guys do, and she probably knows that. But, at the moment, what she needs most is a relationship with a boyfriend. Before she met K-Fed she was going crazy, as the "Chaotic" TV series showed. But after she met him she entered one of the most serene periods of her life.

It could be that the same is going to happen now. I'm not convinced that we should be making a long-distance, remote-control diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She does have some strange episodes, but we only seem to see manic ones and I've neither seen nor heard any evidence that she experiences the depressive end of the spectrum.

AND it's hard to deny that, based on pap pix and videos, she seems to function in a fairly mundane fashion most of the time. She eats, shops, drives her car... we haven't seen her foaming at the mouth yet, nor going around on all fours barking like a dog, nor trying to fly off the roof of her house. I'm not saying she's normal - my article "Shadow - the elusive personality of Britney Spears" on this site pointed out her abnormalities away back in early 2005.

What about her babies? Is she not trying her best to get them back? I have no idea. Maybe she's just concentrating on getting herself into a better place emotionally and mentally before she tries again. Maybe she's just filling the days when she can't have her babies with Adnan rather than be lonely and end up doing something foolish.

I may be the only person who thinks this, but I'm actually glad she's with Adnan. This is a girl who CANNOT be on her own. If he can see her through this awful time, keep a watch on her through the nights and be a calming presence in her life, then that's fine with me.

Alright so I read this article through a few times and found you do have a bit of a point in the bottom half. While it's a horrific idea to date a paparazzo, if it keeps her sane I can see why it's an Ok idea. Not a good decision but better than harming herself.

The top half of the article though just seems like the usual spin from you where you make out like it all happened to Britney not because of her.

You do realise it took four hours for the police to get her out of the house? That doesn't happen with someone who's willing to negociate.

As for thinking she had the right to keep the babies for longer because she spent time at the depo - she was only there for 45 minutes. Anyway, there's no logic in that. She's like a little girl "I did that so now I can do this!" She should have just asked the judge the proper way like she did when she wanted an overnight stay, and look what happened with that - he granted it!

You also conveniently didn't mention the fact that while the court monitor was putting Sean in the car, Britney took Jayden into a bathroom and locked herself in there with him.

And can you blame Kaplan for calling the police or for the police thinking she was on something with pictures like these? :

I mean, come on. She clearly cracked that day. It'd be impossible in the first few hours not to ponder the possibility of drugs.

I also think the reasons for the "hysteria" behind Britney hooking up with Adnan are as follows :

1. She went on national television to cry about how much she hates the paparazzi - now she's DATING one. How does one woman become so hypocritical?

2. He's still technically married. He and his wife are separated but you know people are just going to latch onto the fact that she's dating ANOTHER dude who still kinda has another chick already. It's K-Fed all over again. Oh and it's interesting to note that a few days ago she was out and about wearing the dress she wore to her wedding reception.

Anyway, the hospital carried out tests, but found that she was clear of drugs and alcohol and had no other reason to detain her, so they released her with the minimum of delay. In the meantime, Kaplan had seized his moment and put the wheels in motion to remove her visitation rights.

Fine about the clear of drugs thing but she also checked herself out, not the hospital checking her out. She ran for the hills once Dr. Phil turned up. I don't really mind that she did that but again, check your facts.

And why wouldn't Kaplan get her visitation rights removed? Would you REALLY want your kids with her at this time? Do you think Kevin would feel safe and trust her to do the right thing again around them? Nope. It would have been a HUGELY stressful situation for little Jayden and for now, it's best if the stress of raising the two of them was taken away until she's mentally well enough to care for two toddlers.

I'm having a quiet chuckle at your saying "Check your facts" because you seem to have gotten most of yours from some debatable sources. For example, it's only recently being claimed that it took police FOUR hours to get her out of the house. Earlier they said THREE hours but now they're trying to crank up the drama. Also, other sources have said that the bathroom door was never locked. And the hospital RELEASED her. If she was on a 5150 order she could not have checked herself out unless the hospital approved her release.

Whether she was deluded in thinking she was entitled to keep the babies for longer isn't the point here. The point is that she believed it. I didn't say she was right.

You seem to have a problem distinguishing explanations from excuses. I was trying to explain how the media hoopla had its origin in the LAPD's mistaken perception that she was on drugs. I wasn't trying to excuse her from anything she did, so your remarks about "spin" are irrelevant.

In showing those pictures, you seem to be forgetting that almost anybody would show signs of distress and disorientation if they'd just been forcibly removed from their house by police and strapped on a gurney. We don't know what she looked like before Kaplan called the cops. I'm pretty sure he was there in his role as a lawyer, not as an amateur medical expert or drug tester.

As for your explanations of why people hated Adnan? I don't buy it. Your explanation deals with why people might have disapproved of Britney going with a paparazzo but it doesn't deal with why people hate him so much. He may be a perfectly decent guy. The attitude of most of the media was colored from the outset by claims that he was intending to sell her out. There's no point even arguing about it.

And finally, the question of whether she should have the babies. Well, I doubt that she's a fit mother at the moment, and i wouldn't want to leave them in her custody. But I also doubt that being brought up almost entirely by nannies employed by Kevin is the very best thing for them, nor do I think that being kept away ENTIRELY from their mother is a good thing. Why do people seem to buy Kevin's idea that being "settled" and "stable" is any substitute for being deprived of their mother's love? It seems to me that the Court's actions are more motivated by sanctioning and punishing Britney, and trying to force her to change her ways, than by what's best for the babies.

The police themselves said four hours. Anyway, 3 or 4 hours, it doesn't matter, she still wasn't negoicating with them and that was enough for them to strap her down. She lost it that night, I don't care what you try to spin it into.

The hospital released her because she's an adult and they can't let an adult stay if they don't want to.

Whether she was deluded in thinking she was entitled to keep the babies for longer isn't the point here. The point is that she believed it. I didn't say she was right.

Where exactly are YOU getting this from? It's the first I've heard of this theory and I don't think it's fair you take a stab at my "sources" when you seem to be making up your own theories for what went on.

You seem to have a problem distinguishing explanations from excuses. I was trying to explain how the media hoopla had its origin in the LAPD's mistaken perception that she was on drugs. I wasn't trying to excuse her from anything she did, so your remarks about "spin" are irrelevant.

Your tone came across as blaming the public and the media for thinking that when...she gives us all the evidence we need in order TO think that.

Spinning once again.

This is a woman who's shown increasingly unstable behaviour for months on end now, with each "incident" getting more serious.

If it was, say, Angelina Jolie being carted out like that with those looks on her face, I'd support your theory. But when this is the woman who shaved her head, flashed the paparazzi numerous times, and attacked a car with an umbrella in a fit of rage - well, I don't agree with you that just anyone would look like that.

I don't know what your sentence on Kaplan had to do with anything, either.

Did you even read what I said? The dude is still MARRIED! You think that's not reason enough to hate on someone? And I repeat, she's dating someone who's profession is to make money off her and who she's repeatedly spoken out about invading her privacy.

But I also doubt that being brought up almost entirely by nannies employed by Kevin is the very best thing for them, nor do I think that being kept away ENTIRELY from their mother is a good thing.

Yeh, the typical fantard response : "Kevin just hands them to the nanny". Just because the nanny occasionally takes them out for walks doesn't mean they're being raised by the nannies. You really think the judge would approve so much of Kevin if he wasn't doing any kind of parenting? The fact that you spend most of your time on here trying to convince people that there's more to Britney that what we see, then feeling as though you have the right to entirely judge Kevin based on the little you see says a lot about you.

However, I also don't think they should be away from her all the time but I'm sure if she bothered to turn up in court (then STAY there for the whole session) the judge would gladly grant her some custody back.

Again, I bring up the time where she politely asked for an overnight stay and was granted it immediately. Her just turning to leave the court the minute she gets there only makes her look even worse. All the judge has to go on then is that there's one parent here who hasn't shown any signs of mental instability and who the kids seem content with. The other is never out of the news or out of sight for one thing or another. And she never seems to want to prove anyone wrong.

Anyway, she goes to starbucks and other stores all the time with just as many paparazzi surrounding and harrassing her so to me the truth is she's done some bad, bad shit and can't face up to it.

PART TWO

Why do people seem to buy Kevin's idea that being "settled" and "stable" is any substitute for being deprived of their mother's love?

Because when a mother's love also comes with paparazzi, constant driving trips and general instability, it's NOT a good thing. Yes, they should be allowed to SEE her sometimes but until she gets herself back to normal (if she ever was) then they NEED that calm presence Kevin seems to be. I'm sure a father's love is JUST as important.

It seems to me that the Court's actions are more motivated by sanctioning and punishing Britney, and trying to force her to change her ways, than by what's best for the babies.

And deservedly so. She's behaving badly and can't even clean up for her kids so take em away until she learns. It's about time she grew the fuck up and learnt some responsibility.
